Course 2- Memory & Cognition

My description: This class teaches key concepts about brain function. We are able to further understand why someone thinks a certain way, why you can remember one thing but not something else, or why people remember stories differently. The class also teaches you practical applications to improving your own memory and not falling for the tricks the mind plays.

UNE’s description:

How individuals acquire and apply knowledge plays a critical role in everyday life. This course is designed to introduce the basic concepts and theories associated with studying human memory and cognition. Emphasis will be placed on the application of these theories by discussing topics which are of most relevance for students. The study of reading, for example, is included in chapters on attention, language, and text comprehension. Efficient learning strategies will be discussed in relation to short- and long-term memory as well as visual imagery. A discussion of language will reveal how the implications of sentences influence legal testimony and advertising, and a chapter on decision making discusses implications in court room and emergency scenarios.

Key point I learned: When someone tells you a story, your brain often adopts that story in your mind and makes it your own. For an example, when someone tells you about an accident that you witnessed yourself, you are very likely to remember it in the same way the person telling the story remembered it…. even if those set of facts were completely wrong and you recognized that they were wrong!!

Prior Work: Below is a lab report I did on one of the several mini labs we did on memory throughout the course! Within this report, you were instructed to do the mini lab that goes along with the report, and then create a 3-4 page paper that answers the questions she prompts you to answer. You must also find a similar study that relates to the lab you did in some way and mention why you think it was relevant.
